Experiencing a distressing event leads to emotional consequences that can impact permanently an individual's life.
PsyMood is a platform that connects individuals to specialists based on their language and cultural backgrounds.
In this FREE online webinar, we are bringing Aime Hutton and Jude Gorini to talk about how mental health affects the LGBTQ+ Community.
The importance of speaking about mental health and its effect on marginalized communities has become particularly prevalent in recent years, as research studies have shown the true devastation the pandemic has had on communities across Canada (WHO). That is even more heightening for people identified as part of the LGBTQ+ community. For example, a study (Statistics Canada) shows that lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals are 2.5 times more likely to face depression, anxiety, suicidality, and substance abuse than heterosexuals. Research also points out that LGBTQ+ people have higher use of mental health services than non-LGBTQs+. Another study (U.S transgender survey, 2016) indicates that 40% of transgender individuals have attempted suicide in their lifetime.
We know that it is extremely hard to face social disparities, discrimination, and difficulties to find mental health support. To contribute to breaking the stigma and building more supportive environments, PsyMood wants to encourage open dialogue around the importance of mental health for LGBTQ+ individuals. Let’s provide access to education, resources and increase the visibility of this diverse community.
