“An empty mind is the devil’s workshop!” “Silent mind makes the most noise!”
We’ve all heard some variation of this saying, but what does it mean? Our minds have the potential to dwell on things – bad memories, trivial annoyances and even fantasies.
However, dwelling on things that are out of our controls can lead to negative impacts on your well-being. Humans are inherently social and active creatures. We are our best selves when we are engaging our minds. Working on a meaningful professional project or picking up a hobby are some examples.
Staying occupied with work that you enjoy is a great way to keep idle thoughts at bay. In fact, research has shown that people with regular hobbies are less likely to suffer from stress, low mood, and depression. Hobbies are a great way to relax and temporarily take a break from serious life concerns. It doesn’t have to be anything grand, just simply taking regular time out for activities that you enjoy is enough. Join a book club, go on a bike ride, build model trains, or learn an instrument – the possibilities are endless!
Think about the little things that bring you joy and try to bring more of those moments in your life.
Our Minds have the Potential to Dwell on Negative Thoughts
Sometimes, there are days where our minds wander off to negative thoughts; whether it would be stressing over work, an argument you had with a friend or loved one, or got a bad mark on a test. When that happens, we can’t help but dwell in those negative thoughts.
But we are also capable of shifting our minds away from those feelings and have positive thoughts to keep us occupied.
So whenever you start having negative thoughts, try occupying or surrounding yourself with what makes you happy and push those negative thoughts away from your mind.
Stay Occupied to keep Idle Thoughts at bay
Read a book, go for a run or binge watch your favourite movie/tv show if you feel your thoughts are overwhelming you today.
Give a friend or loved one a call to have a chat; it can be about anything.
Having a hobby decreases chances of Stress, Low Mood, and Depression
Do you have a hobby you like doing in your free time? Sports? Drawing? Playing an instrument?
Having a hobby to occupy yourself with can decrease your levels of stress & depression. Whether you do this during your break or as a way to unwind, it will boost your energy and keep a positive mind.
Carve out time for Small Activities – It doesn’t have to be grand, just FUN!
You don’t need to do big activities for you to keep your mind away from negative thoughts, do activities that you can have fun doing!
It can be as small as cooking a simple recipe, watching funny videos, acting out a scene from your favourite movie in your room. Make it what you want to be!
As long as it takes your mind of negativity and stress from everyday life, that is what’s important. Think about the little things that bring you joy and try to bring more of those moments in your life.
