Happy International Self-Care Day!
Each year on July 24th, we recognize International Self-Care Day as a way to promote the adoption of self-care for a healthy, happy lifestyle. This year’s theme is #SelfCarePromise. It is meant to encourage individuals to make a personal commitment to embrace a specific self-care practice into their routine.
Self-care covers an entire umbrella of practices and actions. According to the World Health Organization, there are eight main areas of self-care: physical, psychological, emotional, social, professional, environmental, spiritual, and financial. Essentially, self-care involves anything that can ensure a well-balanced, healthy and positive lifestyle. With such a vast scope, it also stands to be true that practices of self-care can be different around the world.
We at PsyMood believe that cultural diversity should be celebrated, so let us take a look at how self-care is practiced around the world:
When in Sweden, take a Fika break
Fika is often described as the art of the Swedish coffee break. Fika is a concept that encourages people to slow down and appreciate the small things in life with loved ones. It is an essential part of the day, almost a ritual. Individuals make time for coffee, snacks and socializing with friends and family. It provides an opportunity to take a mental break and strengthen relationships.
When in Taiwan and Japan, take a midday nap
The practice of afternoon naps is common around the world. We have all heard about the Spanish siesta. However, companies in Japan and Taiwan encourage employees to take power naps during their lunch hours or in the afternoon. In fact, some places will even stop operations and turn off the lights during lunch hour to create a calming environment. Waking from a power nap increases alertness and energy – it is a great way to prevent fatigue.
When in Canada, connect with a PsyMood Specialist
Acknowledging your troubles and seeking help is also an important form of self-care. It can seem overwhelming to show your vulnerability to a stranger that might not know your experiences. However, therapy is an important part of self recovery and growth.
At PsyMood we have specialists that share your language and cultural background, so that you can overcome insecurities about not being understood and focus on getting better.
When in France, disconnect from your device
Long working hours and constant screen time have been known to cause stress and anxiety. To combat this, France passed a law in 2016 that makes it illegal for employers to expect employees to engage in work related activities outside of office hours. This helps maintain a healthy work-life balance, as well as provides time and energy to put towards personal growth.
When in India, get a coconut oil scalp massage
Scalp massages help relieve stress and tension from the head. It is known to alleviate pain from headaches and migraines. In India, scalp and head massages are used to unwind after a long stressful day. Adding in essential oils can further enhance the health benefits. Use some almond oil to soothe your mind or coconut oil to promote hair growth!
When in England, enjoy afternoon tea
English high tea or afternoon tea is world famous. Gathering with friends and family over a warm cup of tea and snacks offers a way to rejuvenate yourself for the second half of the day. It can be comforting and fun. There are different teas for different types of days. Feeling restless and tired? Try some Chamomile! Have a headache? Try some ginger or lavender! Like the Swedish Fika, teatime in England is a way to take a break from the busy hullabaloo and connect with others. It helps people socialize or enjoy time to rest and reflect on their own.
When in Switzerland, go on a mountain retreat
A change of scenery can offer many benefits to physical and mental wellbeing. Getting fresh air and sunshine while walking or hiking can help enhance body function and mental focus. In Switzerland, there is no shortage of beautiful landscapes that can be explored during ‘wellness weekends’. Mountain getaways are extremely popular with the locals as a way to relax and leave the worries behind.
Although the process of self-care may differ across cultures, the ultimate goal of achieving a healthy lifestyle and mind is common in all parts of the world. The best thing is, all of these self-care activities are easy to adopt, no matter where you live in the world.
Get inspired and try to incorporate a self-care action into your daily routine!
