International Non-Binary People's Day: Celebrating Diversity and Identity
Every year on July 14th, the world comes together to celebrate International Non-Binary People’s Day, a day dedicated to recognizing and honouring the non-binary community. This day is an important reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality, representation, and acceptance for those who do not identify within the traditional binary gender framework. Created to amplify non-binary voices and experiences, this day sheds light on the challenges faced by non-binary individuals while promoting awareness, education, and inclusivity.
Origins and Significance:
International Non-Binary People’s Day was founded by UK-based activist and artist, Kye Rowan, in 2012. Rowan saw the need for a day to raise awareness about non-binary identities and the unique challenges they face, as well as to provide a platform for non-binary individuals to share their stories and foster a sense of belonging. The date, July 14th, was chosen because it is midway between International Men’s Day and International Women’s Day.
Understanding Non-Binary Identity:
Being non-binary means that an individual’s gender identity doesn’t fit within the traditional binary concept of being exclusively male or female. Non-binary people may identify as a mix of both genders, as neither, or as a different gender entirely. This identity challenges societal norms and highlights the diversity of human experiences beyond the confines of the gender binary. Embracing non-binary identity often involves a journey of self-discovery, self-acceptance, and advocating for recognition and respect.
Inspirational Non-Binary Figures:
Several non-binary individuals have risen to prominence as advocates, artists, and trailblazers. And while we continue to work toward dismantling prejudice, it is important to celebrate these individuals who have chosen to be authentically themselves and, in turn, act as inspirations for the younger generation.
Jonathan Van Ness: A loveable TV personality and hair stylist, Jonathan (JVN) is known worldwide for their role on Queer Eye.
Alok Vaid-Menon: A performance artist, writer, and LGBTQ+ rights activist, Alok challenges gender norms through their work and advocacy.
Hikaru Utada: A renowned Japanese-American singer-songwriter and producer. Hikaru is considered the Queen of Japanese Pop.
Indya Moore: An actor and model, Indya advocates for transgender and non-binary visibility in the entertainment industry and beyond.
Canada's Support for Non-Binary Individuals:
Canada has been making strides in recognizing and supporting non-binary individuals. In 2017, the Canadian government introduced “X” as a gender designation on passports, allowing individuals to choose a gender-neutral option. Moreover, many provinces in Canada offer non-binary individuals the choice to select a non-binary “X” marker on their official identification documents. These initiatives contribute to fostering an environment of inclusivity and acknowledging the existence and rights of non-binary people.
Canada is also home to numerous advocacy groups and organizations dedicated to supporting non-binary individuals. These groups work to raise awareness, provide resources, and advocate for policy changes that protect and advance the rights of non-binary people. Some of these organizations include the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, Gender Diversity Canada, and Egale Canada.
To conclude, International Non-Binary People’s Day is a powerful reminder of the importance of recognizing and embracing diverse gender identities. By celebrating this day and learning about non-binary experiences, we can contribute to a more inclusive and accepting society for everyone, regardless of their gender identity. As we honour the struggles and achievements of the non-binary community, we commit ourselves to dismantling prejudice and ensuring a world where everyone can live authentically and without fear of judgment.
